In July 2001, it was published the results of epidemiological study that showed that in the United States the number of deaths due to systemic infections, defined as "Severe sepsis" is close to the number of deaths from heart attack and is still growing. At that time, revealed the new face of universal health hazards caused by microorganisms. Over the centuries, the risk from infectious diseases were the face of an epidemic - a pathogen, a clinical form, the rapid progress and quickly spread. Today is not only a micro-organism is an essential virulence determinant of HCMV infection. The new face of the reaction of the human body shapes, as amended, and inadequate to the signal transmitted by the microorganism. Picture of systemic infection was shaped by the development of civilization and progress of medicine, aggressive treatment, while a continuous selection of resistant organisms.
Description of the picture very well described as "sepsis" in the sense that they understood Hippocrates, a process that destroys life in contrast to the life-giving "pepsis. In recent years, we learn to look differently infection. Not only through the observation of one species or one group of organisms, but by studying the reaction of the organism to an infectious agent. In the face of their vision that "sepsis" is related to cancer. Like a cancer - a modern plague of humanity - the clinical form of "sepsis" is common, has a variable clinical course, takes many organs and is characterized by high mortality. And just like cancer, systemic infection may have different etiological causes, a fundamental pathogenetic processes take place at the cellular level. Treatment in both cases, it can be both surgical and pharmacological treatment, is usually complex and costly, and the course of therapy difficult to predict. No wonder that the new classification of "sepsis" is trying to use the system adopted in the diagnosis of cancer.
The first decade of the twenty-first century is a period where medicine meets the new phenomenon of "sepsis", trying to better identify and more effectively controlled. Why there are companies, organizations and initiatives of local and global, such as the Surviving Sepsis Campaign. The interest in this issue of the medical community in Poland is large and hence the national initiatives, such as sepsis Working Group of the Polish Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care. To confront the threat caused by the systemic consequences of infection, it is necessary multicenter and multidisciplinary collaboration and the integration of science and the environment representing the medical practice around this issue.
So I understand the sense of establishment of the magazine with the title SEPSIS. I want to see in its pages have been shown to make research and colliding views on the phenomena caused by the systemic forms of infection. Therefore, the letter needs both cognitive-date information from the circle of basic science and clinical studies and practical analysis and implementation. The Scientific Council of the magazine I want to focus on the widest possible number of representatives of medical science and much count on their help and support. I have this great privilege that I start to realize its business initiatives and with the help of the established publishers of high reputation in the medical publishing market.
Of course, both editors and the Editorial Board and the Publisher will shape the image and position of the letter. Ultimately, however, to continue its development and will determine the fate of the medical community - you - Ladies and Gentlemen - our future readers and contributors and reviewers of the publication in the journal SEPSIS.
